3/14/2010 Dress Rehearsal for States at Tom Bass Park of Houston PDF Print E-mail

Fundraiser Tournament for Texas States

March 14th, pi Day, was a great day for a disc golf fundraiser. Most of us have been counting the weeks until the time change and finally, gloriously, it arrived. What better way to celebrate an extra hour of daylight than to rise with the sun for a disc golf event? And Sunday was quite a day for disc golf; warm but not too hot and with a still wind for most of the morning round.

Thirty-six players came out to Birdshot's “Dress Rehearsal for States” fundraiser tourney. Half the $10 entry fee went to TxSDGC and the other half went to payout. Billy Gilbert and the Birdshot staff volunteered for the event. The event ended up raising over $200 for states as many of the winners donated their winnings to States also. We played a morning round on Powell and spent the afternoon out on Wilmont.

In the Open division six disc golfers battled it out on Powell and ended up with one stroke separating all six players, Jim Kelly and Boo Pearson with 55 and the rest with 56. Their afternoon round on Wilmont settled the lead with Tim McCall's jaw-dropping 50 to win by five strokes. Jim Kelly took second with a double 55 and Neal Dambra took third with a double 56.

The Intermediate division was packed with 20 players eyeing a $100 purse. Scott Rutherford and ERic Jubin heated things up in the morning round tying the pros with thier scores of 55. Wilmont broke their tie as Eric lead the Intermediates by three strokes with a 59 for first place with a combined 114. Scott Rutherford took second with his Wilmont round of 62 for a combined 117. Third place went to Darren Weir with his 57/64 showing. Adam Metz took fourth with 121 and fith place saw a tie between Darrel Cooper and Kyle Jenkins with their 123s. Clint McCollom took seventh place with a 125 and Andrew Wright, Cody Carothers and Scott Pearson rounded out the winners with a three way tie for 8th place.

Five players made up the Recreational division, six if you count little Tristan Brogdon, who joined the Rec card with her mother Tiffany Brogdon. The morning round on Powell saw Chris MacGregor leading by two with his 61 shot round. Wilmont continued a good day for Chris who put in a 69 and won the Recs with a combined 130. The Rec action in the afternoon was for second. Tiffany Brogdon clawed back from a three stroke deficit on Powell to take second by one stroke over third place Alan Russell with his 139.

The Advanced-Grandmasters made a five card and had a great day in the park. Their round on Powell had Jack Camp in a comfortable seven-stroke lead going into Wilmont. Wilmont again went to Jack who shot 69. Billy Gilbert made an impressive run to get out of his four stroke hole with his 74 shot 2nd on the Wilmont card, but it was Gene Engle and James Blank with their identical 66/77 rounds for a second place tie in the division. Chuck Conaway also played in the division and promises to play harder and get his name in the results next time.

After the tournament we threw CTP for the Ace Pot. TJ Straub took the $35 CTP with his 240' shot.
